Claude von Riegan

He is the heir to House Riegan, the leading family of the Leicester Alliance. He serves as the house leader of the Golden Deer at the Officers Academy.

He possesses an easygoing air and a constantly nonchalant smile, yet he is a cunning individual who excels at devising schemes and is not averse to deceiving others when necessary (though in the story, he is more prone to withholding information or misleading people than outright lying). On the other hand, Hilda—who knows him well—recognizes that he is actually quite serious beneath that exterior; his room is cluttered with stacks of books.

He also has an exceptionally strong attachment to life; he often admonishes the protagonist—who tends to take reckless, self-sacrificing actions—by reminding them that "you need to be alive for anything else to matter."

House Riegan had been in turmoil over the succession ever since Claude's uncle, Godefroi, died in an accident three years prior; it was only recently that Claude was suddenly announced as the heir. His background raises suspicions, given that his very existence was completely unknown before that announcement. However, he undeniably bears the Minor Crest of Riegan—one of the Ten Elites—on his body, suggesting he truly possesses the blood of House Riegan.

Beyond that, he is a man shrouded in mystery for a future alliance leader; he is strangely knowledgeable about lands outside Fódlan and, unusually for a noble, skeptical of Fódlan's religious views. His un-noble-like attitude has led various powerful figures—both within the Alliance and in other nations—to view him with suspicion, a fact of which Claude himself is well aware.

While his parents appear to be alive, he is reluctant to speak about them in detail.
